A Boom Cylinder Piston is used to extend and retract the boom. The piston has a series of grooves on its surface. The grooves are used to contain the fluid that is used to power the piston. The piston is attached to a connecting rod, which in turn is attached to a boom linkage. When the fluid is pressurized, it enters the cylinder and pushes the piston down. The connecting rod then converts the linear motion of the piston into the rotary motion of the boom linkage. This causes the boom to extend. To retract the boom, the fluid is released from the cylinder. This allows the piston to move up, which causes the boom to retract.
